“Don’t you think it’s time you told your employer the truth?”

Simon’s words smote Maggie’s heart. She’d been plagued with guilt every time she went to work these past three days. Simon was chafing to get back to Wabash, but he’d reluctantly taken a room at the boardinghouse and allowed her to work off her debt. The extra time also allowed Fiona to gather her strength back. It was a small victory, but one that allowed Maggie to hold her head up. Except for the lies she was living with her employer.

Maggie dropped her head. “ ’Tis true she needs to know,” she admitted. “And today is the last day I need to work. But sure, and it won’t be pleasant to tell her.”

Simon nodded. “Making things right never is. But it’s what God expects of us.”

Heat flooded Maggie’s face. She thought so seldom about what God wanted. She tried not to think of Him at all. But Simon made her want to think about Him, to be better than she was. There was no getting around the way he made her heart come up into her throat with admiration for the kind of man he was. Every day she watched him with Fiona and saw his strength tempered with kindness and gentleness. Fiona adored him already. She no longer thought of him as the enemy.

And Maggie guessed she didn’t, either. He was too kind to be an enemy. And though she might not agree with what he was doing to them, she knew he was only doing his job. Maybe Maggie was wrong to try to keep Fiona with her. Simon would be her uncle if Leora kept Fiona. He could provide some much needed stability and love. But every time Maggie thought about allowing things to run their course, a spirit of determination and rebellion hardened in her. She’d fought too long and hard to keep her sister. She couldn’t stop now.

“But sure, and you’re right,” she told him. “I’ll tell Mrs. Watson the truth and beg her forgiveness.” The thought made her chest pound with anxiety. An apology was never easy, and this one would be particularly difficult after Mrs. Watson had been so good to her.

Clapping her hat on her head, Maggie left Simon in charge of Fiona and made her way down the street to work. Mrs. Watson was sweeping off the front stoop and smiled when she saw Maggie.

“There you are! I have a delivery ready for you on the counter. It goes to Mrs. Miller two blocks over. The address is on the box.”

“Could I talk to you first, Ma’am?” Maggie’s heart was pounding so hard she found it hard to breathe.

“Well, of course, Lad. What is it?”

The concern in Mrs. Watson’s face made Maggie feel worse. She took a deep breath. “But sure, and ’tis ashamed I am to be telling you this. I must ask your pardon for not being honest.” She swept her hat from her head. “ ’Tis not a boyo I am, but a lass.
